On The Road Again

Those of you who have followed the journey of the Sisterhood of the Travelling Shoes will be pleased to know that the destination for our 2025 walk has finally been chosen. For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about a recap: In 2019 we three sisters set a goal to walk a 5 km in every province in Canada as a way to honour the memory of our parents and have some sisterly fun and adventures while we’re at it. Thus was born the Sisterhood of the Travelling Shoes and to date we have completed walks in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Quebec and Nova Scotia.

East Coast Girls

Flights and hotels are booked, race registrations are done and so this fall we have decided to cross two destinations off our list and do walks in Moncton, New Brunswick and Charlottetown, PEI. We have already started training for the walks in hopes that we will not be the last ones to cross the finish line.

We are also planning some cultural excursions as we feel it is important for us to be known as more than just superbly trained athletes. In our previous travels we have seen churches, libraries, monuments, and various other landmarks and feel we are ready for some things that are, shall we say, off the beaten track.

Magnetic Moncton

The one thing we three sisters all agree on is that we must see the World’s Largest Lobster located just outside Moncton. It is 35 feet long and welcomes you to the Lobster Capital of the World, Shediac New Brunswick. Definitely worth the trip especially if we can find a community lobster supper to attend.

The more mainstream phenomenon that we hope to visit is the Magnetic Hill in Moncton where if a driver takes their foot off the car brake at the bottom of the hill the vehicle appears to roll backwards, uphill. The jury is still out on this one as Little Sis, who is the official Sisterhood driver, isn’t sure she wants to drive backwards up a hill even though she has been assured this is just an optical illusion. Negotiations are ongoing at this point.

Mr. Potato Head

You probably thought I would talk about visiting the Anne of Green Gables site or the red sand beaches as places we want to see in PEI. But no, the Sisterhood is looking for more unique things to do and have found the perfect place to visit… the Canadian Potato Museum complete with a 14 foot high fibre glass potato at the museum entrance and a Potato Interpretive Center inside. It is here you can also sample seaweed pie made from Irish moss and only available at the Potato museum. Not sure about trying the pie but I’m sure we will pick up some interesting potato facts along the way.

There are two other places under consideration for our visit to PEI – Canada’s smallest library, which Middle Sis is pushing hard for and the Glass Bottle Houses which, as the name implies, are made of 25,000 glass bottles. Big and Little Sis seem partial to this one. Hopefully by the time we arrive in PEI the stalemate over this will be broken.

Family Ties

This trip will also have a bonus stop to visit our brother who lives outside Montreal. We haven’t seen him since we did a 5k walk in Montreal two years ago so it will be good to spend some time with him and his family as none of us are getting any younger… This picture was taken the last time we were together. See any resemblance to a certain fried chicken magnate???

Not related to our trip, but another big family event that I would be remiss if I didn’t mention is Little Sis’ upcoming 60th birthday. At last she is officially, officially a member of the senior set. Can retirement be far away? Happy Birthday Little Sis!🥳

And so dear reader the Sisterhood is ready to take a summer break. We’ll be relaxing and spending time with family and we hope you will have the chance to do the same. But never fear we will be back in the fall ready to share more of our thoughts and happenings. Till then wishing you a sunny, happy summer.
