Athletic Adventures,  Travels with My Sisters

Off To Randy’s House We Go…Maybe?

The above picture is of our brother Randy. Despite an uncanny resemblance to Howdy Doody, we think he is just adorable!

Have you ever heard of the saying from the 70’s, ” Keep on Trucking?” Well this is exactly what the Sisterhood of the Travelling Shoes is going to do. Since we have completed two virtual walks, one along the Cabot Trail and one around the Ring of Kerry, we decided to do one of entirely our own design. Read on faithful follower and see the exciting adventure that we have in store for our next virtual walk.

Mom and Dad were dedicated mall walkers. Every morning they were up early to rack up miles. In fact, Mom often joked that they covered so many miles around the mall that they could have walked to Montreal! And therein lies the inspiration for our next challenge.

“There Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, to Keep Us From Getting to Randy”

As luck would have it, our brother Randy lives in Montreal and after much debate we decided that we would walk there to visit him. A daunting task for sure, as Montreal is 4900 Km from where we reside on the west coast of Canada. Imagine our surprise when we realized that if each of us walk 10K per week, it will take us approximately, wait for it….. 3 years….. hence the “MAYBE” in our title. Our revised and more realistic plan is to aim for Edmonton and if we are still keen and in fantastic shape, we will continue on our quest.

There are of course concerns when one decides to undertake such an epic challenge. Our main one is to make sure we have packed enough, and that we have warm clothes because we will most certainly encounter hazardous terrain and bone chilling cold. Middle Sis is the most responsible packer between the three of us and is always prepared for anything so we will put her in charge. (I hope she doesn’t forget to pack our toques.)

Although we are true nature lovers, we are also concerned about the wildlife that we will likely encounter. Big Sis is really, really afraid of bears even though her only knowledge of them is Saturday morning cartoons with Yogi Bear and BooBoo. Who knows what her reaction will be if we see one… I’m guessing terrified and perhaps frozen to the spot. (Middle will no doubt have planned for that possibility with a bulk purchase of bear spray.)

Our only other logistical problem is determining our starting point. Middle Sis lives farther away from Big and Little Sis. Don’t worry we don’t expect her to walk to our house from where she lives. We have agreed to let her fly to catch up with us, and we will go from there. So our starting point is in the vicinity of the City of Vancouver.

Three years is a long time to be walking, but we’re cheered by the thought that this is going to give us time to see all the fascinating and unusual sights along the way, and there are many. We will be visiting:

  • The World’s Largest Lawnmower in Enderby, B.C.
  • The World’s Largest Easter Egg in Vegreville, Alberta
  • The World’s Largest Dinosaur in Drumheller, Alberta
  • The Gopher Hole Museum in Torrington, Alberta
  • The World’s Largest Perogy in Glendon, Alberta

Should we decide to continue past these exciting monuments and venture further east, we have plans to visit:

  • The World’s Largest Paper Clip in Kipling, Saskatchewan
  • The World’s Tallest Moose ( Mac the Moose ) in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
  • Van Gogh’s Sunflowers on an Easel in Altona, Manitoba
  • The World’s Biggest Nickel in Sudbury, Ontario
  • The World’s Largest Apple in Colborne, Ontario
  • 24 Sussex Drive Ottawa, Ontario…..just to say a quick hello

Ready, Set, Go

Our adventure starts on October 4th, 2021and since we are not particularly tech savvy we will be using a wall map, thumb tacks and colored thread to illustrate our progress. (I am not going to be the map person. This is not my cup of tea, but once again, Middle Sis will be taking the lead.) What would we do without her?

We will be regularly posting our progress so you can see how we’re doing. If you are detail oriented and like to plan ahead, you are invited to join us at Randy’s house in October 2024 for some poutine and beer, and if we are really lucky, a visit by Bonhomme. Mark your calendars. Au revoir for now.

Our brother excitedly awaits our arrival!

We plan on publishing a new post every Monday so stay tuned for our next one entitled “What a Difference a Year Makes?”
