Athletic Adventures,  Travels with My Sisters

Only 3,476.83 Kilometres to Go

Big Sis can hardly wait until she can hold Randy’s hand again

The Sisterhood is on the move. In fact, we’re on fire! Our virtual walk to Montreal to see our brother Randy is underway and our progress is nothing short of remarkable….sort of.

You may remember that we started our quest in late October, after confirming that Randy would make the necessary celebratory preparations for our arrival in three years time. This of course would include the design and implementation of our post walk medals and t shirts. After all, this is a massive undertaking and we feel that we are entitled to a gala reception in recognition of the determination and dedication that we will have displayed en route to his house.

As you know, we began our journey in Vancouver but to date, things have not gone according to plan and progress has been slow. We have unfortunately dealt with multiple devastating issues.

I’ll Do My Crying in the Rain

Crying indeed….In December the Fraser Valley which is the agricultural heartland of our Province was flooded beyond belief. Torrential rains poured down on homes and farms and many were evacuated, their life’s work and homes gone in an instant. The devastation was heartbreaking.

By extension, the main highways to the interior of our Province were destroyed in many places. Travel to the Interior was impossible. Our plan ( yes, we do have a plan) was to arrive in Princeton just after Christmas. Well, forget that.

Walk a Mile in My Orthopedic Shoes

Once the floods receded and the highways were back in use, the Sisterhood regrouped, did a sharp reset and we were once again “in motion.” That is until Big Sis suffered a major setback. It’s a well known fact that she suffers from a “bunion affliction.” Suffice to say that walking has become painful and rather than submit to surgery, she has chosen orthotics and soft orthopedic shoes. The Sisterhood was devastated for her. Thoughts of a moratorium on our challenge whirled in our heads. What to do?

As per usual, she displayed extreme bravery and vowed to carry on. Then she invested in an exercise bike. Visions of her whizzing past us as she racked up the mileage kind of annoyed us. This was after all, a walking expedition, and technically she could be penalized for breaking the rules.

As it happens, by accident she purchased an unusual bike. It has a set resistance and the only way you can control the difficulty is to pedal faster or slower. You can’t just start with no resistance and dial it up. Our hearts broke for her, but hey, that’s life, as the saying goes.

Baby it’s Cold Outside

Meanwhile, Middle Sis showed unimaginable grit and determination in the midst of an unusual January cold snap, as she just kept on walking. Her hands and feet were numb and she had frosted eyelashes but she carried on. Fortunately she managed to vividly capture the pain of her plight in a photo. Her determination has paid off big time though because so far, she is the mileage leader, putting Big and Little to shame. Well done Middle! (Note the ethereal and inspiring backdrop….beautiful!)

Whose Idea Was This Anyway?

Biscuit here. Some how I got involved in this walk and I don’t even know who this Randy guy is. I’ll go along with it as long as they feed me well and give me regular bathroom breaks, and meditation time if my anxiety level becomes unmanageable. It’s a good thing I am easy going because this is seriously impacting my leisure time and my instagram followers won’t be happy. I mean come on folks give a dog a break. There had better be some outstanding doggie treats at the end of this ordeal.

Thank you Biscuit but that’s enough complaining. You made your point, so lets move on.

So, What’s the Deal?

You may be wondering what exactly have we accomplished? We are proud to announce that we have made our way to Princeton…. a bit later than planned but nonetheless we’re here and it only took us approximately 104 days! (Please refer to the above map)

What is keeping us going you might ask? Well, it’s knowing that Randy is cheering us on from the sidelines, (likely with a beer in hand) constantly monitoring our progress and silently willing us to give it all we’ve got. Thank you Randy. We are truly inspired by your support. See you in a couple of years.😉

We plan on publishing a new post every Monday. Stay tuned for our next one entitled “Thinking While Drinking”
